Characteristics of Super Duplex Stainless Steel

For use in the sulfite paper industry, the first-generation Duplex stainless steels were created in Sweden more than 70 years ago.

Duplex alloys were initially developed to address corrosion issues brought on by aggressive chemical process fluids, such as cooling waters that include chloride.

Due to its heterogeneous microstructure, which contains about equal amounts of ferrite and austenite, Duplex stainless steels are a family of grades whose corrosion resistance varies depending on the amount of alloy they include. When referring to highly alloyed, high-performance Duplex steel with a pitting resistance equivalent of >40 (based on Cr% + 3.3Mo% + 16N%), the term “Super-Duplex” was first used in the 1980s.

Super-Duplex steel, which frequently replaces 300 series stainless steel, high nickel super austenitic steels, and nickel-based alloys in the chemical and petrochemical, pulp, and paper sectors, offers remarkable resistance to acids, acid chlorides, caustic solutions, and other conditions.

The chemical composition that has significant concentrations of chromium, nickel, and molybdenum enhances the resistance to intergranular and pitting corrosion. The structural hardening caused by nitrogen additions is facilitated by the interstitial solid solution process, which increases yield strength and ultimate strength values without compromising toughness.

In addition, compared to typical stainless steels, the two-phase microstructure ensures greater resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking.

The popularity of Duplex steel has steadily grown since the release of its first generation. High-strength, corrosion-resistant super-duplex coil manufacture has recently been adopted by the chemical and marine industries, as well as by the building and mast rigging, wire lines, hoisting and pulley equipment, and well service strands industries. In fact, advancements in wire manufacturing methods have made it possible to produce steel wires with a diameter as small as 1 mm.

Various Alloys

Super-Duplex is a type of stainless steel that belongs to the Duplex group.

The amount of alloy in duplex stainless steels affects how well they resist corrosion. Today, Duplex stainless steel can be put into four categories:

Lean Duplex, like 2304, which has no added Mo on purpose;

2205, the workhorse grade that’s used more than 80% of the time for duplex;

25 Cr duplex, like DP-3 and Alloy 255;

Super-Duplex: has 25–26 Cr and more Mo and N than 25 Cr grades, like 2507, Zeron 100, UR 52N+, and DP-3W, but less Cr than 25 Cr grades.
