    Application

The outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness of a pipe can be found in reference tables like the ones below. These tables are based on ASME standards B36.10M and B36.19M. For instance, the outside diameter of NPS 14 Sch 40 is 14 inches (360 mm), and the wall thickness is 0.437 inches (11.1 mm). But the NPS and OD numbers don’t always match up, which can be confusing.

The NPS and OD values are different for NPS 1/8 to 12. For example, the outside diameter of an NPS 12 pipe is 12.75 inches (324 mm). Use the tables below to find the real OD for each NPS value. (Note that the size of a tube shows the actual dimensions, not the nominal ones.)

When NPS is 14 or higher, OD and NPS are the same. In other words, the outside diameter of an NPS 14 pipe is 14 inches (360 mm).

The difference between NPS 1/8 and 12 inches is because the original NPS values were set to give the same inside diameter (ID) based on wall thicknesses that were common at the time. But as the thicknesses of the walls changed, the ID changed, and the NPS was no longer directly linked to the ID or OD.

For a given NPS, the outside diameter doesn’t change, but the wall thickness does. For a given Philippines, the OD gets bigger as the NPS goes up, but the thickness of the wall stays the same or gets bigger. Using the equations and rules in ASME B31.3 Process Piping, it is possible to show that the pressure rating goes down as the nominal pipe size (NPS) goes up and the schedule stays the same.

Some specifications use pipe schedules called standard wall (STD), extra strong (XS), and double extra strong (XXS), but these are actually part of an older system called iron pipe size (IPS). The IPS number and the NPS number are the same. STD is the same as SCH 40S, and SCH 40S is the same as 40 from NPS 1/8 to NPS 10. XS is the same as SCH 80S, and 80S is the same as 80 for NPS 1/8 through NPS 8. Between NPS 1/8 in and NPS 6 in, XXS wall is thicker than schedule 160, but schedule 160 is thicker than XXS wall for NPS 8 in and larger.

    Blockage or ball test

When a pipe is welded or bent, the most common way to check for blockages, misalignment, ovality, and weld bead dimensional conformity is to run a round ball through the pipe coil or circuit. If the inner diameter of the pipe needs to be measured, the weld bead should be taken away if welding is used. Usually, the ball’s clearance must not be more than 1 millimetre (0.039 in). The inside diameter of a pipe is used to figure out how much of an oval shape it can have. 5% to 10% ovality is usually okay. If there is no other way to check for ovality or blockages, this test should be considered a standard requirement. You can’t use a flow test instead of a blockage or ball test. Pipe sizes by schedule can be found in the pipe dimension table, Specification ASME B36.10M or B36.19M.

Most of the time, stainless steel pipe comes in standard weight sizes (noted by the S designation; for example, NPS Sch 10S). But stainless steel pipe can also come in other sizes, called schedules.

    NPS 1/8 to NPS 3½

Note that DN does not exactly match the size in millimeters. ISO 6708 defines it as a dimensionless specification that is only indirectly related to a diameter. The ISO 6708 sizes give existing inch sizes a metric name. This means that there is a 1:1 relationship between NPS and DN sizes. “DN 6” and “DN 8” do not have values in ISO 6708, but they are listed in ASME B36.10M.

Tolerance: The tolerance on pipe OD is +1/64 (.0156) inch (0.40 mm), -1/32 (.0312)inch (0.79 mm).

When converting from inches to millimeters, ASME B36.10M-2015 says that pipe wall thickness should be rounded to the nearest 0.01 mm (0.00039 in).
