Grade 316L is an austenitic stainless steel grade. It is one of the most commonly used alloys coming  second only to 304 in commercial importance.Stainless steel grade 316L contains added molybdenum content, which enhances the alloy’s improved corrosion resistance, particularly for general corrosion like pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. Stainless Steel 316L Flanges contains Molybdenum, an element granting them their speciality: an augmented rust resistance. Stainless Steel ASTM A182 exhibits its excellent corrosion resistance behaviour when exposed to a broad spectrum of corrosive environments and medium. Although the SS ASTM A182 is regarded or referred to as “marine grade” stainless steel, the flange manufactured from this alloy is not resistant to warm sea water. ASME SA182 grade 316L is easily roll formed into a variety of parts. The alloy is also well suited to several forming operations such as stamping, heading and drawing. Though post work annealing is recommended to relieve internal stresses that can occur. Cold working A182 316L will increase both its tensile strength and hardness of 316L grade flange. When exposed to warm chloride environments, the stainless steel 316L falls prey to either pitting and crevice corrosion. A182 flange 316L  gets subjected to chlorine related stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above 60°C. The ASTM a182 f316l Flange is usually regarded as the standard “marine grade stainless steel”. But the astm a182 grade f316l  is not resistant to warm sea water. In many marine environments 316l ss flanges material does tend to exhibit surface corrosion. This surface corrosion is usually visible as brown staining, which is especially associated with crevices and rough surface finish.

Generally the werkstoff sa 182 f316l tends to be more resistant  to corrosive media when compared to grade 304 stainless steel. Although these stainless steel 316l flanges are subject to pitting & crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments, and to stress related corrosion cracking at temperatures above 60 °C, SA182 316l flange is considered resistant to potable water.  The astm a182 gr f316l  is displays corrosion resistance in potable water, which can cantainup to about 1000 mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures & gets reduced further to about 500 mg/L at 60 °C. 316l ss flanges exhibit good oxidation resistance in intermittent applications up to a temperature of 870 °C and in continuous service to 925 °C. Continuous use of flange astm a182 f316l between the temperature range of 425 °C – 860 °C  is not recommended if subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance is important in any application.
