The formation of elemental sulfur is a regular affair in sour wells. An oxidation reaction with hydrogen sulfide due to contamination with oxygen produces sulfur. The precipitation and deposition of sulfur on the walls of the pipe are very common in Sour wells. Excess deposition of sulfur causes regular steel pipes to crack. But, the use of high chromium alloys like Alloy 600 Pipe can delay the rate of corrosion.
