About Duplex Stainless Steel
Duplex stainless steel is called “duplex” because they have both ferritic and austenitic stainless steel grains in its microstructure. The yellow austenitic phase is shown as “islands” in the middle of the blue ferritic phase. When duplex stainless steel is melted, it goes from a liquid state to a solid structure that is completely ferritic. About half of the ferritic grains change into austenitic grains (“islands”) when the material cools to room temperature. The result is a microstructure that is made up of about half austenite and half ferrite. Composition of Duplex Stainless Steel
Strength – normal austenitic or ferritic stainless steels are about half as strong as duplex stainless steels.
Toughness and ductility– Duplex stainless steels are much tougher and more flexible than ferritic grades, but they don’t have the same great properties as austenitic grades.
Corrosion resistance – As with all stainless steel, the main thing that makes stainless steel resistant to corrosion is how it is made. For resistance to chloride pitting and corrosion in cracks, the most important things are the amount of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen in the metals. There is a range of corrosion resistance for duplex stainless steel grades, just like there is for austenitic stainless steel grades.
Stress corrosion cracking resistance – Duplex stainless steels are very resistant to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), which is something they “took over” from the ferritic side. SCC can be a problem for standard austenitic like Types 304 and 316 when chlorides, humidity, or high temperatures are present.
Cost – Duplex stainless steels have less nickel and molybdenum than austenitic stainless steels that are just as resistant to corrosion. Due to the lower amount of alloying, duplex stainless steel can be cheaper, especially when alloy surcharges are high. Also, because duplex stainless steel has a higher yield strength than austenitic stainless steel, it is often possible to make the sections thinner. When compared to a solution made of austenitic stainless steel, the combination can save a lot of money and weight.
