Grade 316 is an austenitic stainless steel grade. It is one of the most commonly used alloys coming  second only to 304 in commercial importance.Stainless steel grade 316 contains added molybdenum content, which enhances the alloy’s improved corrosion resistance, particularly for general corrosion like pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. Stainless Steel 316 Flanges contains Molybdenum, an element granting them their speciality: an augmented rust resistance. Stainless Steel ASTM A182 exhibits its excellent corrosion resistance behaviour when exposed to a broad spectrum of corrosive environments and medium. Although the SS ASTM A182 is regarded or referred to as “marine grade” stainless steel, the flange manufactured from this alloy is not resistant to warm seawater. ASME SA182 Grade 316 is easily roll-formed into a variety of parts. The alloy is also well suited to several forming operations such as stamping, heading, and drawing. Though post-work annealing is recommended to relieve internal stresses that can occur. Cold working A182 316 will increase both its tensile strength and hardness of 316-grade flange. When exposed to warm chloride environments, the stainless steel 316 falls prey to either pitting and crevice corrosion. A182 flange 316  gets subjected to chlorine-related stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above 60°C.

ASTM A182 f316 flange offers good resistance to oxidation when used in intermittent service applications at a temperature of 870°C. When the a182 f316 flange is used in an application that requires continuous service, the recommended temperature is about 925°C. However, continuous use of  flange f316 at a temperature range of 425°C – 860°C is not recommended. This condition only applies to the ss f316, if the alloy is required to have corrosion resistance in the water. The resistance of Stainless Steel 316 Slip-On Raised Flanges near the seashore will also be dependent on whether the stainless surface can be rinsed by rainfall, which will reduce the tendency for surface chlorides to concentrate by evaporation.
