Stainless steel is a popular, durable surface for kitchens that resists rust and stains.  If the protective chromium film on your appliances, pots, or sink is destroyed, they will start to rust.  It is critical that you understand how to remove rust and return your surfaces and appliances to pristine condition.  Here are some excellent solutions for preventing rust on stainless steel.

How do I remove rust from stainless steel?

When you see rust on your stainless steel appliances or surfaces, the good news is that it can be eliminated using simple materials that you may probably find in your pantry or buy at the grocery.

Baking soda and water

Before you begin cleaning your surface, verify the manufacturer’s instructions, as not all steel finishes can be cleaned in the same way.

Make a mixture of 1 tablespoon baking soda and 2 cups water.  Baking soda is an excellent technique to remove rust and stains from stainless steel, and because it is non-abrasive, it will not damage the surface.

Smudges can be removed with a clean cloth or by rubbing the solution into the stain with a toothbrush. Rinse the area and wipe it with a moist paper towel; the rust should come off on the towel.

White Vinegar

White vinegar is another effective way to remove rust from stainless steel.  Vinegar, which contains acetic acid, is a weakly caustic material that can break down rust, debris, filth, and stains, but it cannot stand up to heavy rust.

Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and do not dilute it.  Apply to the surface and wipe with a soft cloth or paper towel.  Rinse the surface with water.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice’s acidity also helps to dissolve rust.  To make a paste, mix equal parts lemon juice and baking soda.  Apply the paste to the surface and scrub it with a damp sponge.

If there is still rust on the surface, apply additional paste and let it remain for 15-30 minutes before scrubbing again.

WD-40

If you have some WD-40 on hand, it can be very useful for rust removal.  If you’re cleaning your stainless steel kitchen benches, bathroom sink, or railings, there’s a low-odor variety specifically made for these areas.

Simply spray the area, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe it away with a soft towel.

Important points when removing rust

While it is important to utilize the proper material, there are several things to avoid.  Using the wrong products can cause irreparable damage.

Never use steel wool or brushes to clean stainless steel.  These are abrasive and can harm your appliance or surface, potentially causing additional rust.

It is also recommended that you avoid cleaners containing fluorine, iodine, bromine, or chloride.  Chlorides can produce abrasions and discoloration, which can lead to corrosion and rust.
